When I was growing up in Kent, England, my life was influenced greatly by music. I used to love listening to old vinyls at home. Performers such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Jim Reeves, and Perry Como have been some of my greatest influences.
There’s something distinctly charming about music from previous generations, especially its love songs. I believe songs about romance and love touch a chord in all of us. They speak of the human yearning to love and be loved in the most idealistic way possible, where everything is perfect. They are a sort of escapism in a way and transport us to that world where romantic love is real, reliable and enriching.
I believe that’s the reason why love songs bring so much enjoyment to people – they usually have lyrics that touch human hearts everywhere combined with lifting, memorable melodies that linger in our memories for years.
Gospel music has also played a tremendous role in my life. I find there’s no better way of expressing my faith than through song.
Eras such as the 1940s 50s and 60s produced some amazing, timeless music. Even though I wasn’t around in those times, I often joke that this is music from my generation! The opportunity to help keep this music alive brings me great joy and satisfaction.
